Natural Fabrics

We prioritise sourcing good quality natural fabrics

- textiles made from all-natural fibres and substances. These can come from animals or plants and have been used for thousands of years which can be recycled as well as biodegradable.

The natural fibre options we use:

Animal fibres:

  • Silk – Developed in ancient China from silkworms, known as “the queen of fabrics”

  • Wool – rich and insulating fibre from sheep

Plant fibres:

  • Cotton – the world’s most used natural fibre from the cotton plant

  • Bamboo – soft and moisture-wicking fibre growing in popularity

How are they manufactured?

Weaving Threads

Each type of natural fabric is manufactured slightly differently.

It starts with the fibre and how that is extracted as well as treated to become a thread or yarn.

As some natural fibres are plant derived and others animal, the extraction and process methods are different. Wool including Angora and Cashmere, for example, is either sheared or combed, whereas silk comes from the cocoon of the Mulberry silkworm.

Plant fibres come from harvesting the specific plant or crop and following exact methods to obtain the correct form of the fibre.

Fibre is the base of all textiles, which are made in 3 stages:

  1. Spinning – fibres are first spun to make yarns (which are used to create the fabric)

  2. Weaving/Knitting – this is when the yarns are made into textiles

  3. Finishing – textiles are finished to make them more useful for their intended purpose

Deadstock Fabrics

Deadstock fabrics are fabrics produced by high-end fashion houses which are scrapped - either burned or sent to landfills (that would take centuries to decay!).

Here at Wee-Cute Designs, we give these fabrics a second chance & create them into beautiful pieces of clothing and/or accessories!

We source all our deadstock fabrics through UK suppliers and also use our leftover scrap pieces to be re-used or recycled.

Disposal Guide for The Compostable Mailer:

If possible, re-use the compostable mailer as many times as you can before disposing of it. you could:

  • use it again to return an unwanted/damaged item to the seller (compostable mailers come with two adhesive strips to make this even easier);

  • use it again to send something else (you can even flip it inside out);

  • cut it up and use it as weed matting in your garden;

  • cut it up and use it to grow seedlings (it’s non-toxic!);

  • use it to carry or store green waste.

It’s home compostable and will break down in a normal compost bin in about 6 months.

Remove any labels (unless you’re sure that they’re also compostable), sticky tape and the recyclable plastic backing of any adhesive strips that remain and throw it into a compost bin to start the process!

(Or with food waste bin!)

Please don’t try to recycle it.

Like most compostable items, it’s not recyclable and will have to be removed from the recycling stream.
